In the Beginning
As I reflect on my industrial training during my fourth year in the university, I can vividly recall the days when my superiors would send me on errands hat do not provide any substantial impact on my professional development.
It was a period marked by errands rather than experiences that would contribute to my skill set.
Fast forward to my youth service days, I found myself in a similar situation. The training I received didn’t equip me adequately, particularly in the art of preparing for high-profile interviews.
The interview processes at the two organisations I worked for over the span of 10 years seemed more like a game of “man-know-man” – a scenario where personal connections played a pivotal role. This shielded me from the arduous task of job hunting and facing rigorous interviews that many others experience.
On Realising The Importance of Preparation
During my tenure in employment, I decided to test the waters with two job interviews. However, I had a strong inkling that the results wouldn’t be in my favour because I lacked the skills needed to navigate interviews successfully. It became evident that preparation was the key, and I was falling short in that department.
The way forward?
So, here’s my advice to fellow job seekers
- Don’t squander your time sending out CVs when you know you’re not adequately prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
- Invest your time wisely in training, seek assistance online.
- Consider finding a mentor who can guide you through the intricacies of job hunting and interview processes.
Fast forward to today where I find myself as a Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) owner, I’ve learned the importance of being well-rounded in my field. Now, I actively pursue training opportunities to stay updated and ensure that I am well-grounded in what I do.
The journey from being an inexperienced trainee to a SME owner has underscored the significance of continuous learning and preparation for success in any professional endeavor.
So, job seekers, never undermine the importance of preparation to pave the way for a successful career journey.
